When it comes to protecting your home, understanding the types of termites you’re up against is half the battle. Termites are incredibly destructive pests, and different species behave in different ways—meaning the best treatment option often depends on the type of termite you’re dealing with.

So let’s break down the 3 most common types of termites in Australia, how to identify them, and what you should do if you spot signs of an infestation.

Coptotermes – Australia’s Most Destructive Termites

Coptotermes are a subterranean termite species and are considered the most aggressive and destructive in the country. They’re known to attack timber structures, tree stumps, and even electrical wiring.

How to spot them:

  • White, soft-bodied workers
  • Build mud tubes to travel undetected
  • Like areas with high moisture

These termites are often responsible for serious structural damage in homes. If you suspect their presence, call in the experts immediately.

Schedorhinotermes – The Silent Destroyers

Schedorhinotermes are another common type of termite in Australia. They build their nests under buildings, inside tree stumps, or close to the foundations of homes. Because they prefer timber in contact with soil, they often go undetected until major damage has been done.

How to spot them:

  • Soldiers have large, powerful jaws
  • Damage often found near skirting boards or floorboards
  • Nests usually hidden below ground

They can cause extensive damage quickly, which is why regular inspections are essential.

Nasutitermes – The Mound Builders

Often found in urban and rural areas across Australia, Nasutitermes are unique in their colony structure. They build large above-ground mounds and prefer nesting near eucalyptus trees or in dry timber.

How to spot them:

  • Mounds up to 1 metre wide and 75cm tall
  • Often found near trees or in garden beds
  • Can also nest in wall cavities or under flooring in drier areas

Although not as aggressive as Coptotermes, they can still do serious damage if left untreated.
